More often than not, these issues come down to one thing: planning and detailing early enough in the project.
At W Outdoor Living, we encourage designers, architects, contractors and clients to involve us as early as possible when a scheme includes an outdoor kitchen, pergola or canopy system.
Not because the products need to dictate the landscape design, quite the opposite. Early involvement allows us to help integrate them properly into the wider scheme.
Start with the design, then develop the specification
The first step is understanding how the space needs to work.
Where will people cook, dine and relax? How will they move through the space? Where are the main views from the house? What shelter is required? How will the kitchen relate to the dining area, and how will the pergola sit within the wider landscape?
Once that has been established, the product specification can begin.
For an outdoor kitchen, this could include the layout, appliances, worktops, storage, finishes and overall dimensions.
For a pergola, considerations might include its size and position, orientation, roof system, screens, heating, lighting and integrated accessories.
But selecting the product is only part of the process.
The detailing makes the difference
Once the specification is agreed, attention moves to the technical details that will allow everything to integrate seamlessly on site.
Depending on the scheme, this can include:
- Foundations and structural requirements
- Finished floor and paving levels
- Drainage and rainwater management
- Electrical supplies
- Water and waste connections
- Gas supplies where required
- Lighting positions and controls
- Heating feeds
- Cable routes and concealed service points
- Access for installation
- Interfaces between the product, paving, walls and surrounding landscape
These may sound like small details, but resolving them early can make an enormous difference to the finished result.
A well-planned installation should feel as though the pergola or kitchen was always intended to be there, rather than something that has been added to the landscape afterwards.
Allow for manufacturer lead times
Specialist outdoor living products aren’t always available off the shelf.
Pergolas, bespoke outdoor kitchens and other architectural outdoor products often need to be designed, detailed, approved and manufactured to order, with lead times that need to be incorporated into the wider construction programme.
That is another reason we encourage early conversations.
Ideally, the specification and technical information should be developed while the wider landscape is still being designed or while enabling and construction works are taking place.
Once dimensions and finishes are confirmed, orders can be placed at the appropriate stage, allowing manufacturing to take place while foundations, services, paving and other landscape works progress on site.
This helps avoid a situation where the project is otherwise ready for completion but is waiting for a key product to arrive.
